We continue our report on Business Opportunities in Tokyo with a review of the Düsseldorf seminar.

Düsseldorf Seminar
Thursday, February 7
Radisson SAS Scandinavia Hotel

Mr. Gerd BeckerMr. Gerd Becker
General Manager
Metro Cash & Carry International GmbH

Metro Cash & Carry International GmbH is a division of one of the world’s leading distribution companies, the METRO Group. Metro Cash & Carry offers cash and carry wholesale services to member hotels, restaurants and other commercial customers for food and food-related products.

Metro Cash & Carry currently has three stores in Tokyo. Last October announced plans for a large expansion in the number of stores in Japan. Mr. Becker commented that the Japan market in Japan is extremely well-defined, so it is vital that companies planning to enter the market carefully study its characteristics and adapt accordingly.

Mr. Paul MutzMr. Paul Mutz
President
Tente Rollen GmbH

Tente Rollen GmbH manufactures transport castors. Last year, the company incorporated in Japan after initially establishing a representative office.

Mr. Mutz was responsible for setting up the representative office and also took the office through the incorporation process. The decision to incorporate was made to show Tente Rollen customers that it was serious about building market share in Japan. Participants particularly identified with Mr. Mutz’s comment: “You will succeed in Japan with carefully measured steps.”

In addition to these market-entry presentations, 10 Tokyo-based SMEs introduced their technical expertise and outstanding products.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government believes the seminars were highly beneficial for European businesses that are considering establishing operations in Tokyo.
