Greetings from the Governor The city of Tokyo has a long tradition and history dating back 400 years to the founding of the shogunate. During the past half century, Japan has attained a high level of economic growth and has become the economic power in the world. The capital city has been the engine for the growth of Japan's economy and society with its high concentration of government, economic, cultural, and other urban functions.Today, state-of-the-art business centers with cutting edge urban infrastructure, which are used to transmit all sorts of innovative ideas worldwide, are being developed in Tokyo, as seen with the establishment of Waterfront City, one of the world's largest waterfront development projects, and the cluster of ICT industries rapidly growing in Akihabara. Japanese industry is supported by many companies, universities and research organizations engaged in advanced research and development, as well as the numerous small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) in Tokyo that are producing unique world-leading technologies and first-class products. In addition, the completion of Haneda Airport's new runway will boost internationalization, and efforts to bolster the wide-ranging cooperation between the three Keihin ports will strengthen the ports' international competitiveness even more. Linked by direct flights to the world's major airports and served by numerous container vessels traveling along major routes, Tokyo is a city of diversity in terms of human resources and logistics. In short, Tokyo offers an excellent business environment as the capital of the economic powerhouse that is Japan, which largely explains why most foreign-affiliated companies that invest in Japan have offices in Tokyo. By clearly demonstrating its high concentration of urban function and advanced technologies, Tokyo will continue to grow as an even more matured city. We strongly recommend Tokyo as an option for business investment. Global corporations as well as SMEs that possess their own superior technologies and products await the chance to develop business opportunities with you. ![]() Shintaro Ishihara, Governor of Tokyo ![]() Tokyo in 10 years
